The term Limb Lengthening Surgery refers to a medically practiced procedure by which a person's limbs are being resized. By this procedure the patient’s limbs or arms or legs are being lengthened by stretching the ligaments, tendons and the respective muscles that surround it. This procedure also involves the risk of infection, delayed healing, nerve damage, blood vessel damage, joint stiffness, pain, discomfort and uneven limb length.

Here is a step by step process that takes place with a patient on whom the limb lengthening surgery is going to be performed:

  1. Patient’s evaluation: Before proceeding with the surgery, the patient needs to go through a complete medical evaluation which includes some diagnostic tests, X-ray imaging, CT-scan, etc.

  2. Preoperative planning: Before the surgery, the surgeon and the patient plan the intention of the surgery and decide the desired length of the bone.

  3. Anesthesia: The surgeon gives the patient anesthesia drug for making the part of the area where the surgery is going to be performed numb, making the procedure of the surgery painless.

  4. Bone cuts: The surgeon makes a precise cut on the bone and cuts it into two separated segments.

  5. Fixation device plantation: The surgeon now plants the fixation device in between the two segments of the cut bone.

  6. Gradual lengthening: Now the surgery is complete and the patient is given some days of resting time for the limbs to naturally get attached.

  7. Healing and consolidation: After several weeks of the surgery, the bone naturally gets healed and consolidated.

  8. Removal of the fixation device:  Now the device is being removed.
