Hey guys!
Was thinking about how one could simulate time of day and day/night cycles.
Starting with the graphics, right now separate maps seem to be used for a day or night time setting respectively. However, what if it would be possible to have a more "seamless" transition between the two?
If possible, one could perhaps achieve simulating night time using a day time map as the base, but making it darker and desaturated using by effects and filters. Alternatively, perhaps blending between two map layers (one day and one night version) might also be a possibility, or a combination of that and using filters?
As for the shadows, I noticed the optional shadow layer. However, if you make the shadow layer the same size as the shadow casting object and also make the shadow a solid fill, you could simulate the sun moving across the sky by offsetting it?
Think of it as a dropshadow of sorts; if you for example have a solid cube (a house) and then you have a solid dark cube of the same size behind it, you can offset the dark cube in relation to the house cube to simulate the light coming from different directions.
Just an idea.

This would make map making even easier (as ppl don't have to spend hours working on lighting which is very important to set a map's mood) and it might enable a smooth transition between day & night. As for shadows, they could never be perfectly realistic as we're working in a 2D environment. However, we could simulate directional shadows of sorts to give it all more depths. If this turns out to be possible, it will definately show up as a feature on the kickstarter preview (but will probably also boost the main financing goal a bit unless we add it as a stretch goal).
