One of the most authoritative classical texts on Ayurveda is the Ashtanga Hridayam, which was composed by the sage Vagbhata in about the 7th century CE. This is a complete treatise on general Indian medicine, covering principles of health, disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. It is in poetic verse, makes memorization easy, and is simplified with the help of earlier texts like the Charaka Samhita and the Sushruta Samhita to integrate rather complicated therapeutic ideas. The text is divided into six sections, each of which describes one aspect of Ayurveda, including diet, lifestyle, herbal remedies, and surgical procedures. Heavily revered by Ayurvedic practitioners, the Ashtanga Hridayam remains an invariably foundational text of holistic healing to incorporate the healthy balance of life by way of natural therapies, detoxification, and integration of body, mind, and spirit.
