Hello. I wanted to jump in real quick and give a kind of unofficial official update on what is going on with Skirmish. To preface, I'm not a dev but someone who was a fan of the software in its beta (not really. More like alpha) stage and did a few things with it. I still have it installed on my computer.
If you've come here looking for a free VTT for your online RPG sessions, then you've come to the right place. Skirmish is free and for all intents and purposes, will be for the foreseeable future. The reason I can say this is that the devs have stopped any support whatsoever. They have not responded to anything here on the forums in literally years. So there is no support for the software. That's the bad news.
However, what they left behind is a working VTT, albeit one that needs much more work. But you can definitely use it. You simply have to be a bit creative about it in some areas because there are some bugs and it is not intuitive in many of its conventions. But if you're strapped for cash and can't shell out the bucks for premium VTTs like Foundry or Fantasy Grounds, and you're not into browser based VTTs (though I would take a gander at Let's Role), you still can use Skirmish. No doubt. That's the good new.
I used to make videos for Skirmish but once I saw that there was no development of it; I stopped. However, I'm considering making a video here and there about the software because for something that's free, it's still not bad.
So, if you don't mind the nonexistent support but want to get deeper into the mechanics of how it works, take a gander at the videos I've posted starting here:
